Thank you for visiting Dark Mountain Research, our goal is to provide the finest supplies, equipment, information and instruction for survival in harsh environmental and disaster situations.
Dark Mountain Research takes from decades of real life experience and countless hours of training to provide what really works… we work with dozens of individuals, companies, professional organizations and official agencies to identify the equipment and techniques that keep people alive. We realize that whether you are going into these situations willingly, or ensuring that you and your family are prepared for the worst; you are doing so, as if your life depends on it.
Dark Mountain Research was started with really one thing in mind, to provide quality training and reliable products. Over the years I have seen far too many people die, simply because they were not prepared – or worse yet, they were ill-prepared. There is no shortage of shops and online stores that sell survival equipment… but in far too many cases, these shops offer what can best be classified as cheap, survival toys.
Best Survival Shop is different, we have taken from decades of experience and selected equipment that really works; equipment that will help keep you alive – I like to say that at Best Survival, you can shop like your life depends on it. Of course, all of the really cool, high speed gear in the world won’t help you if you don’t know how to use it, so Dark Mountain Research primarily offers courses and instruction.
About the Founder
It seems that survival skills have always been of an interest to me… I spent about half my childhood growing up in the Arizona desert, were we lived in a remotely located home, not too far from the Superstition Mountains – from there, we moved to a small town in the Arizona mountains, where I finished out grade school and high school just below the Mogollon Rim.
When I was about ten years old, I spent two weeks during the summer in a desert survival course, and knew from that point on, that this was a skill I truly wanted to learn – and not long after that, something I truly needed to learn.
Right out of high school, I joined the Army and ended up retiring from the U.S. Coast Guard nearly 30 years later; during those three decades, I have had occasion to experience first hand survival situations, terrorists attacks, devastating storms, floods, horrible accidents and nearly countless search and rescue missions – as well as gotten myself lost or in a jam more than a few times.
All along, I knew that some day I would start something like Dark Mountain Research and Best Survival – after retiring a few years ago, I knew the time was now. And now more than ever.
People are, for a lot of different reasons, starting to think about and making preparations for emergency or disaster situations, and I applaud them for doing so. However, lots of folks just don’t know what they don’t know – and end up buying survival or preparedness supplies that are not what they really need, or are just plane junk. I started Dark Mountain Research and bestsurvivalshop.com to help not only the professional, but those who are taking the steps to protect their home and family.
About the Name
I get asked about the name a lot… and often I have people tell me “I’ve heard of it before” – I think they are mistaking the name for Black Mesa Research Facility from Half-Life. But who knows. The name actually comes from when I petitioned for my college degree and was told that I needed one more class… I walked over to the class schedule and literally picked the next open class: Mythology.
I did my class paper on Norse mythology, and I enjoyed the story of the dragon Nidogg, who leaves his home in the Underworld to wreak havoc on mankind… meanwhile, a pretty clever group of warriors sneak into the dragon’s now empty lair, where they live quite happily. The home of the dragon was Nidafjoll, which translates to “Dark Mountain” – this is where the name for DMR came from, the name of Best Survival Shop is not nearly that complicated.
One thing that I strive for, is to stay accessible, if you have any questions or comments about DMR, Best Survival or anything remotely related, please feel free to contact me directly – and thanks for taking the time to visit.
